For this book club, I developed a cohesive visual identity inspired by the aesthetics of akelarre and traditional gatherings of witches. The designs and illustrations embrace a handmade, tactile feel, drawing on the textures of stamps and woodcut prints. This approach creates a distinctive atmosphere that reflects the group’s thematic focus and gives the book club a distinctive and original visual presence.
The key visuals consist of three elements:
A witch reflected in firelight, cheeky and knowing. She stands as a symbol of autonomy, defiance, and imagination.
A Basque tocado, once worn by women here, tying us to this place we call home.
And the goat (basque "aker") in a witchy hat. In Basque mythology, the goat deity Aker protected homes and the land.
The name of this book club comes from Basque folklore. Akelarres were said to be witches’ gatherings—what the Inquisition called juntas diabólicas. We’ve reclaimed it as a symbol of community, defiance, and creativity.
